Sunset Ombre Braids

For the past 10 years or more, I’ve had permanent or semi-permanent colour in my hair and even henna. I love colour and being able to change my look, but I’m tired of colouring my own hair. Plus with COVID lockdowns, I wasn’t able to maintain regular salon visits to get touch-ups. Braids, twists, and crochet styles have enabled me to explore different colour combinations without having to bleach my hair.

The sunset ombre has to be my favourite so far. The hair is a vivid 4-tone ombre comprised of black, red, bright yellow, and white. When I first took it out of the packaging, I was a bit shocked at how bright the colours were. Once I completed installing it…those concerns were gone. Stretching the hair also made the colours look more blended. I wore this style for about 6 weeks.

I got the sunset ombre hair on Amazon UK, which can be hit or miss when it comes to braiding hair. Thankfully, I didn’t have any issues with this hair during braiding or while wearing the style. It’s soft and easy to work with and doesn’t tangle excessively. I loved it! The sunset ombre hair is available on both Amazon US andAmazon UK; these links go directly to the respective country pages. For the UK, the hair is available with Prime delivery, which if you’re anything like me and change your hair on a whim, it’s extremely convenient! For small knotless braids, I used 4.5 packs.

I did not have any scalp irritation during this style, but that’s partly due to how I prepare the hair. I start every set of braids by soaking the hair in white or apple cider vinegar and hot water. Synthetic braiding hair usually has an alkaline coating; this coating can cause scalp irritation including itchiness, dryness, and bumps. The vinegar removes the coating, and ultimately reduces irritation while wearing the style. Some people are able to use hair straight out the pack; I, however, am not one of them! After soaking the hair for at least 30 minutes, I rinse thoroughly and put it on a towel rack to dry. Sometimes, I’ll follow the vinegar soak with another soak in a mix of water and shampoo to fully remove the vinegar scent. Because I use so much of the vinegar, I buy it in bulk and keep it in my storage closet.

During the braiding process, I used Shine ‘n Jam Magic Fingers for Braiders by Stasha Harris (available on Amazon US and Amazon UK). I’ve probably listed this in every braiding post since early 2020, but it is that good! It helps with cleaner parting and moulding while braiding so there’s less flyaways. Overall, it gives any set of braids a neater look.

I was really happy with set, and I’d definitely wear this colour combination again.
