Nubian Skin Lingerie

Nubian Skin is lingerie brand based in the UK that caters to women who require a darker shade of nude that what you typically find in department stores. I have been wanting to try this brand for awhile so when they posted on Instagram about a pop-up shop this weekend at Live Die Late, I decided to go. The following is the about us section from the company’s website:

A nude bra and skin tone hosiery are the basics of every woman’s wardrobe, at least in theory. For many women of colour, finding suitable skin-tone hosiery and lingerie has not been an option. Frustrated by the lack of skin-tone choices to go with her ever-expanding wardrobe, Nubian Skin founder, Ade Hassan, decided it was time for ‘a different kind of nude’.

Inspired by trail blazing women, Eunice W. Johnson and super model Iman, who created Fashion Fair and Iman cosmetics, Ade took the leap and created Nubian Skin. It’s been an uphill battle, but every revolution starts somewhere.

Nubian Skin launched with a carefully edited collection of lingerie and hosiery to provide the essential underwear needs of women of colour. Headquartered in London, Nubian Skin delivers worldwide and looks forward to growing the company’s offering and expanding its reach.

So for all you beautiful women, next time you need a nude pair of hold-ups or maybe a nude strapless bra to go under that stunning white halter dress, Nubian Skin is only a few clicks away.

Empowering Women. Embracing our Colour.

Colours: Nubian Skin lingerie and hosiery is currently available in 4 colours: Cafe au Lait, Caramel, Cinnamon and Berry.

Lingerie: There are three types of bras available, The Classic Lace Push-up Bra, The Strapless Convertible Bra and The Essential T-Shirt Bra. The colours are a bit darker for the lace ones than the other bras so I have Cafe au Lait for the lace set. In the others I have Cinnamon and Caramel. In the photo above this post, there’s the lace set in Cafe au Lait and The Essential T-Shirt Bra set in Caramel. These are very close in colour. I found that the Caramel has an orange tone to it and Cinnamon is more neutral-brown toned.

As most people have noted, the bras run a little small so you might have to go up a band size.

For panties, Nubian Skin has the following options: The Brief, The Classic Lace Short and The Short. At the pop-up, the packaging actually said Fused Brief and Fused Boxer for the brief and short, respectively. I think I needed to go up a size for the briefs.

Hosiery: The hosiery includes tights and hold-ups in sizes S-3XL. I’ve tried the Caramel tights and they’re slightly too light for me, whereas Cinnamon is too dark. The Caramel isn’t too light that I can’t wear it though. The tights have a golden sheen to them, so that’s something to be aware of if you’re expecting them to truly be matte. If you normally wear a small, I’d suggest going a size up.

My thoughts: I do like the line. If I had to pick a favourite, it’s definitely the lace set. I wish their site had a size guide on it with measurements for the items in their line. This would be helpful when selecting panties and hosiery.

The ladies at the pop-up shop were extremely helpful, especially the one who found my size after several searches! (Thank you!) I’m pretty sure one of them was the owner as well, but I didn’t have much time to talk with her as there were quite a few people that needed help. Everything at the pop-up had reduced prices. I’m kicking myself for not getting more. I’ll definitely be buying more in the future.

Hopefully, they can expand the line in the future to include more colour options and more sizes.

Nubian Skin is available on the company’s website, Asos, Fenwick, House of Fraser and Nordstrom in the US, as well as a few smaller retailers. For more details on where to buy Nubian Skin, check out their list of stockists.
