My Love/Hate Relationship with Spring and Passion Twists

When I took out my pink ombre braids, I knew spring twists would be my next style. They’re easier and quicker to do. I can do them in one day as opposed to the 2-3 days my small braids require. Even the twisting process is easier on my hands. With spring and passion twists, you don’t have to rotate individual sections as you would with rope twists. In theory, they seemed like a good idea. In reality, not so much.

The main difference between the two is that spring hair is a coil; it has a tighter curl pattern than passion twist hair. Passion twists are less bouncy and the ends will not coil as tightly as spring twists.

I used a 3-pack bundle of dark wine/light wine ombre hair (available here) from Amazon retailer Beyond Beauty. They have amazing reviews, but my experience wasn’t the best. It’s a beautiful colour blend and very soft hair. Unfortunately, the package I received was defective so I had a difficult time trying to make it work.

In each section of hair, most of the strands were cut right above the ombre. Because the curls are so tight, it was barely noticeable. I only felt it once I started manipulating the hair and saw how much it was shedding. I’d already done a vinegar rinse and dried the hair so I couldn’t return it. Before doing each twist, I had to pull the tips of the hair to remove any of the cut pieces. This was the only first problem.

Next issue: the spring hair is so silky it’s hard to get a good grip and prevent it from slipping while braiding or twisting. To help with this, I started each twist with a braid and used less product at my roots. I’d then pin the twist down to avoid loosening while twisting to the end. In the future, I’ll probably also start the twist with a braid using a short piece of regular braiding hair or marley hair. The kinkier texture will help prevent any slipping and keep the roots neater.

As you can see, my colour actual hair colour was still visible. I can’t tuck in this style so I’ll probably stick to ombre tones that are closer to my natural hair next time. I only kept this style in for 3 weeks. I’ve done passion twists in the past with better results using pre-twisted crochet hair, which I cut and stretched to my desired length. There was more texture in the strands so it was easier to braid with and held up better over time. I also prefer the kinkier hair because it blends better with my texture.

During the twisting process, I used was Shine ‘n Jam Magic Fingers for Braiders by Stasha Harris. This is by far the best braiding product I have ever used. It made my parting and twists neater. A 2-pack of Magic Fingers is available on Amazon UK (available here). Since I ran out while doing the twists, I finished with the green version, Shine ‘n Jam Silk Edges (available here), which also works well.

Despite all the issues, I still have love for twists. They’re a quick and lightweight styling option. I don’t have to manipulate my hair on a daily basis so it’s low maintenance and protective. I oil my scalp regularly with As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Olive & Tea Tree Oil Treatment and spritz with Taliah Waajid Shea-Coco Condition Daily Leave-in Conditioner, concentrating the nozzle near the ends of my natural hair.
