I’ve rewritten this review at least 3 times already. I cannot seem to make up my mind about this product. One minute I love it, the next I think it’s just blah. I’ve finished the entire bottle now, which is disappointing because I’ve just figured out the best way for me to use it. Below is a combination of my thrice edited review.
Product Claims: Define, Defrizz and Hold Your CURLS in one snap! Your New Go to Styler… Formulated with organic blueberry extract, and raw castor oil, Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly will define, defrizz and hold your curls in place.
Ingredients: Water, blueberry leaf exract (, PEG 40 hydrogenated castor oil (seeds co pressed from the ricinus communis plant), acrylates copolymer (stabilizer that sets the hair and protects it from humidity), carbomer polymide-1, aminomethyl propanol (ph adjuster used at less than 1%), caprylyl glycol (natural fatty acid), sorbic acid (organic food preservative), hexyl cinnamal (fragrance from the essential oil of chamomile).
Thoughts: The product smells great in the bottle and is reminiscent of blueberry popsicles; However, while applying it can smell a bit like like an alcohol-based fragrance, or one of those cheap air fresheners. The jelly has amazing slip and provided lasting definition and hold, which are alll qualities I love in a styler. I usually do my wash and go in the morning, sit under the dryer for about 20 minutes and stretch my hair with the hand-held dryer. This also helps me to get my roots dry. If I wash at night, I sit under the dryer for about 30 minutes on a lower hear setting and stretch my hair overnight by putting the front half in a pineapple.
The only area where I didn’t have as much definition is right in the very front where my part is, and that section of hair has always been resilient. No amount of product will control the frizz there. I have accepted that. Another pro about the Jelly is that it adds shine, and there’s no flaking. I used it with Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave-In and Curl Junkie Beauticurls Argan and Olive Oil Conditioner. My hair is still relatively soft, and there is no sticky residue from the product. However, I do get patches of white balls/flakes, but I think it only happens in sections where I’ve put too much leave-in and not removed the excess products from my hair.
I’ve also tried the Jelly on its own. This is now my favourite way to use it. I did a dry deep condition overnight and rinsed in the morning. After my rinse, I applied Hairveda’s Cocasta Oil and then the Jelly. I added a little water to my hair and then shook my head. Afterwards, I apply a small amount of the Jelly while scrunching for extra hold and curl formation. I really loved this combo. My hair is soft and doesn’t feel dry to the touch, and it looks great! My hair has a light sweet scent to it, but nothing overpowering.
Some cons: Now unfortunately, I’m all out of product. Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly is only 8oz of product for $25 in the US and £18.99 in the UK. I only got four uses out of the bottle. Lastly, on my first two washes, my hair ended up feeling slightly dry, in the days following use. It took some experimenting, but I found that Oyin Handmade’s Hair Dew works well with the Jelly.
If the dryness weren’t there and this played well with more products and cost less, this would be an amazing product, still not cost-effective, but good nonetheless. I love the consistency. It’s basically a jelly version of the Passion Fruit or Blueberry pastes, which some people actually use as their sole wash and go styler. My hair dries quickly when using the jelly and there is no sticky, greasy or waxy residue once dry. I’ve never been able to use a gel on its own and get great results like I have with the Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly.
Would I repurchase? Initially, my response was no, it’s just too expensive. Now though, I think I’ve changed my mind. I’ve reached for this consistently all month. Being able to use it without a leave-in has definitely played a part in my change of mind. Still, I wouldn’t purchase this unless it’s on sale. Similar brands are selling 12, 16 and 18 ounces for $20-$25. I’m certain this is the most expensive product I own (based on $ per ounce). The introductory price was $10; I could understand going up to $15-$18 maybe, but $25, nah.
