First Impressions: Miss Jessie’s Coily Custard

After finishing my coursework, I decided to treat myself to some new products. One of which, I’d been eyeing since it was released: Miss Jessie’s Coily Custard. I’ve barely seen any reviews of this product on my hair type so I was curious. It has no mineral oil, petrolatum, or cones, and fragrance is actually at the bottom of the ingredients list. Quite a change from the typical Miss Jessie’s formulation. Anyways, let’s get to the first impressions.

Product Claims: COILY CUSTARD IS EXCELLENT FOR TRANSFORMING FRIZZY ‘FROS TO SOFT CURLS, FIGHTING CURL SHRINKAGE AND WASH N GO STYLING. Finally, a wash n go styler that really works for “TWAs” and kinky coily hair! Coily Custard is the very best curl styler for transforming tight frizzy ‘fros to loose moisturized curls. Coily Custard is a slippery emulsion that coats each frizzy strand with a dose of super moisture and shine that enhances and defines your curl pattern, reduces frizz, and fights curl shrinkage. With Coily Custard you can now achieve that just-washed look when your curls are shiny, elongated and soft to the touch. Coily Custard is made especially for your glorious crown of curls.

Ingredients: WATER (AQUA), GLYCERIN, HYDROLYZED CORN STARCH, POLYSORBATE 20, HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE, XANTHAN GUM, CHONDRUS CRISPUS (CARRAGEENAN), PECTIN, IODOPROPYNYL BUTYLCARBAMATE, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL, FRAGRANCE, DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, AGAVE AMERICAN LEAF EXTRACT

Thoughts: I clarified and then deep conditioned overnight followed by an oil rinse and light conditioner, which I partially rinsed. I applied Coily Custard in sections on damp hair. They call Coily Custard a ‘slippery emulsion’ and that is the truth! It goes on very easily and has a ton of slip. My hair feels so soft and lightweight with this product! Super soft coil…again, the truth!

It has a light fabric softener scent, but it fades relatively quickly – a lot quicker than any of the other Miss Jessie’s products I’ve used.

Now, I just applied this last night, and my hair isn’t fully dry yet. The roots are slightly damp. So far though, I can say that my hair is defined and shiny. A couple of issues though, it’s sticky, and it also seems like my hair will take longer than usual to dry . If I touch my hair, there’s a sticky residue all over my hands. I’m hoping this will go away once my hair is fully dry. The stickiness is probably due to the high content of glycerin and possibly the pectin also.

I’ll do an update and full review once my hair has dried and I’ve used the product a few more times.

Miss Jessie’s Coily Custard is available in the UK for £11.99 at Beauty By Zara and $14.00 in the USA online and at local retailers. I’m not sure if there are any retailers in The Bahamas at this time. If there are any, message me, and I’ll post the details.
