Baby hair or laid edges can be polarising. People either love them or hate them. Personally, I’m a fan. I may not do extreme edge designs, but I appreciate the art of it. One thing I’ve always had difficulty with is finding a product that provides hold for more than just a couple minutes. I’ve lost track of how many I’ve tried over the years. If it’s in the beauty supply store, I’ve probably owned it at some point. So here’s a few mini reviews of my current hoard.
Gummy Styling Wax – Matte Finish: I made the mistake of trying to apply this how I’d normally apply edge control. It’s thick, hard to distribute, and has a visible white residue. Even with oil on top, it still looked white. The matte finish wax has one of the strongest and longest lasting holds of any edge control I’ve used. However, the residue is a big detractor. No matter what I tried, by the end of the day, my edges were white! That’s not going to work for anyone. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

June Milnrow Black Castor Oil Edge Freeze Control Hair Gel Maximum Hold: This has a softer hold than the white/clear version, but it doesn’t leave a white residue. I ended up reaching for this more frequently than the clear one and just adding Gorilla Snot on top. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

June Milnrow Black Castor Oil Edge Freeze Control Hair Gel Super Hold: An oldie, but goodie! I love this with fresh braids, when only a little bit of hair is left out. Less is more with this product because it will turn white and have you looking a hot mess with a quickness. The hold lasts a few hours without the need to layer gel on top. I haven’t purchased either of the June Milnrow products in over a year so I don’t remember the fragrance. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

Moist Mocha Edge Control: This was a random Amazon find, and it displaces Red One as my current favourite. Moist Mocha has a firm hold, and doesn’t require setting. It has a light sweet, candy-like fragrance. The hold lasted 12 hours on me until I washed it out at night. I wash any edge product out when I do my nighttime face routine. This prevents buildup and leaves a clean surface for morning application and styling. I’m loving this one! I need to try it in the summer heat or back in The Bahamas to see if I’d upgrade this to a 10. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

Red One Blue Aqua Hair Wax: This has a similar texture to the red one. I wasn’t able to apply it because the bubblegum fragrance was a little too strong for me. It reminded me of flavoured medicine for children. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

Red One Green Matte Hair Wax: This has a strong hold and is less matte than the Gummy version. It can leave a white residue if you aren’t careful during application. However, I’d rate this higher than the Gummy version because you can rub it in more after it’s set and remove any of the residue. If you try this with the Gummy version, it’ll just flake and create more of a mess. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

Red One Maximum Control Red Aqua Hair Wax Full Force: From the Jolly Rancher fragrance, to the 150ml size, long lasting hold, and no white flakes…this has been an incredible find. I’ve used it almost everyday since buying it, only stopping occasionally to do reviews of other products. There are two different versions of the red, in the same packaging. There’s Red and Red Cobra. The main difference is the fragrance; Red Cobra has a distinct masculine fragrance. If you want something sweeter, softer fragrance, go with the regular Red version. The fragrance fades so I don’t mind wearing Cobra, but I definitely prefer Red. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

Red One Violetta Aqua Hair Gel Wax: This has a similar hold to the red version with a pleasant sweet scent. Red One wax loses hold in extreme heat and humidity, but it still performs better and holds out longer than most of your readily available edge control products. (Amazon US / Amazon UK)

I have a few other products in my stash so there will be a part two at some point. I’ve tried Style Factor, Keracare, Ebin, and Kiss. I’ve just gotten She’s the Bomb Glazee and Style Factor Extreme Hold Edge Booster. Both of those have good reviews so I’m looking forward to trying them .
