Review: As I Am Naturally Coconut Co-Wash

It's been a long time since I've done a review, but I have been trying out some new products, new to me at least.

As I Am Naturally is a more affordable hair product line geared towards natural hair care. They recently became available at Sally Beauty Supply so of course I went and picked up something during one of their sales.

The Coconut Co-Wash is a cleansing conditioner that is supposed to remove product without stripping the hair. Did it do that for me? Yes! Ampro Clear Ice is no joke. BUT the Coconut Co-Wash effectively removed the buildup.

Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificada, Purified) Extracts: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) and Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine), Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol, PEG-40 Castor Oil, Stearlkonium chloride, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Phytosterols, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Quaternium-18, Potassium Sorbate, Fragrance/Parfum, Limonene, Methylisothiazolinone.

I have also used this as a leave-in. I used it frequently when I was wearing kinky twists to mask the scent of the marley hair and also to moisturize my own hair. As a leave-in on my natural hair, I found the product to be very moisturizing. I know it's supposed to be a cleansing conditioner, but I did not experience any setbacks with my hair when using it as a leave-in.

As a deep conditioner, I fell in love with this product. My natural hair was twisted Senegalese style, and I had not detangled or completely unwound the twists. I just applied the Co-Wash. The next morning my hair felt like buttah!!!I was able to finger detangle and extremely quickly. My fingers were just gliding through my hair. I knew then, it was love. This is a staple. I always want this on hand.

The fragrance is pleasant. Definitely smells like coconut, but it's not too strong. It does linger though. I was craving a pina colada the entire time I was using it. Not a problem for me, but it might be for others.

The one thing I am not a fan of is the packaging. Don't get me wrong; it's beautiful, but extremely impractical. Where am I supposed to place a 16oz jar of product while in the shower? How am I supposed to keep water out of the product? It isn't the thickest of products and could easily spill. Look what happens when I tilt the jar! A bottle, maybe even one with a pump, would be much better.

**Update: I put what was left of mine in an old 8oz Darcy's Botanicals bottle. Much easier to dispense and use now.**

As I Am Naturally Coconut Co-Wash retails for $8 (16oz). It can be purchased at Sally Beauty Supply, Walgreens, CurlMart, and of course the As I Am Naturally website.

Below is my overall product rating:

Price: 5/5
Packaging: 2/5
Fragrance: 4.5/5
Performance: 5/5

Overall: 4.125/5
Honestly, this would be a perfect 5/5 if it were in a bottle. Hopefully, they'll make some changes. Either way, I'd still buy it again...and again.

I definitely recommend this product.

Kinks ;-)

  1. Thank you for this post. I accidentally put this in my hair while doing my Bantu knots. I had a another mixture in the same type of container that I thought I was using. Well not so. I was like oh my do I have to rewash and blow my hair out again. Thanks to you I think its going to give me the result I was looking for.

  2. I did not like this as a co-wash and it didn't react well with other products after co-wasing. It was my first time co-washing. However, I love it as a leave-in. It gives my hair super moisture and you can use the co-wash for a dry twist-out. Very define and soft twists.
