Review: Kinky-Curly Stellar Strands Hydrating Deep Treatment

Kinky-Curly Stellar Strands Hydrating Deep Treatment

This year, Kinky-Curly debuted a new deep conditioner, Stellar Strands. I was surprised to find it in the UK so quickly after the initial release date, but it is here. Too bad I don't like it.
Product Claims: The ultimate hydrating deep treatment! Enriched with Argan Oil & Macadamia Oil, Stellar Strands (TM) will take your curls from status quo to stellar. When used regularly you will notice improved elasticity and reduced breakage while it rejuvenates and moisturizes dry, brittle hair.
Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Hydroxypropyl Guar, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Argania (argan) Spinosa Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Biotin, Silk Amino Acids, Collagen Amino Acids, Glycerin, Panthenol, Polysorbate 60, Phenoxyethanol, Natural Fragrance.

Thoughts: I purchased this after looking at the ingredients and product description thinking it would be a good moisturizing conditioner with a hint of protein. I was wrong. This did not moisturize my hair at all. The first time I used it, I followed the directions and left it on for 30 minutes. I was impressed that I barely needed any product. When I was finished, my jar still looked full. It's a very thick conditioner. My hair was detangled prior to applying the deep conditioner so I wasn't able to get an impression of the slip. Rinsing Stellar Strands was a disappointment. My hair didn't feel like I'd conditioned at all. I had used a cleansing conditioner prior to applying and thought perhaps I needed to clarify.

The second time I used a shampoo, left Stellar Strands on overnight, and attempted to detangle the next day. Fail, epic fail! My hair was a dry, tangled, hot mess. I had to apply some of my HG conditioners on top of this while rinsing just to get my hair detangled. I'm not even sure I want to use this again because the last time was just that bad. My intense protein treatments leave my hair in better condition than this.  If I do use this again, it will be as a pre-poo and/or followed with a moisturizing deep conditioner. There was nothing hydrating about this conditioner on my hair. It might work for someone else, but it just is not for me.

The fragrance was the next issue for me. It smells like Ultra Sheen grease. I haven't used that in over 15 years, but that image popped into my head as soon as I smelled this. It's not bad if used for a short amount of time. It does linger slightly after rinsing but is easily covered with leave-in or styler. I have nothing against grease, but I've never been a fan of that smell. It makes me want to wash my hair instantly.

Kinky-Curly Stellar Strands retails for $13 (USA) and £15 (UK) for 8oz. It can be purchased online directly from Kinky-Curly or at local Kinky-Curly retailers. This is less expensive than some comparable brands so that was a plus.

Would I repurchase? No.

Below is how I'd rate the product in the following categories:
Ratings:
Price: 4/5
Packaging: 5/5
Fragrance: 1/5
Performance: 1/5

  1. Finally! A thorough review. Thank you. Kinky Curly launched this conditioner earlier in the US, but the site keeps saying that the product is not orderable. I have not been able to find any reviews that talked about the actual performance of the product and not just the smell, brand or the Kinky Curly L.A. event where the product was acquired for free. I have used the whole KC system for 5+ years and have all the other products, so naturally I wanted to try the deep conditioner. Looks like I'll be sticking with Curl Junkie for that.
