***Note: (July 12, 2014) Check out my update post on where to get the original formula: Update: Curly Magic Returns?***

Earlier this month, Uncle Funky's Daughter (UFD) restocked their Curly Magic Curl Stimulator after it was unavailable for weeks. This restocking surprisingly came coupled with a formula change. Check out the new ingredients list below along with a statement from UFD regarding the change.
OLD Ingredients: Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Aqueous-Infused Extracts of Marshmallow, Chamomile, Nettle, Horsetail, Vitamin E, Agave Nectar Extract, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate and Natural Fragrance.
Excerpt from UFD's Facebook announcement: "We finally have all the curl enhancing power you are looking for, in our improved moisturizing Curly Magic. The hold is the same firm hold you love, but hair feels softer, more nourished, while the fresh scent is very mild and clean."
NEW Ingredients:  Distilled Water, Vegetable Glycerin*, Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera)*, Xanthan Gum*, Organic Agave Nectar*, Althea Officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Extract*, Organic Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract*, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Extract*, Organic Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)*, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract*, Citric Acid*, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein*, Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Potassium Sorbate (preservative), Fragrance.
*All Natural or Naturally Derived
The main changes are the inclusion of vegetable glycerin as the second ingredient; xanthum gum as the fourth; and hydrolyzed wheat protein and phenoxyethanol as two of the last few. Also, the fragrance is no longer marked as natural.

Check out my review of the original formulation here and my favorite Curly Magic combos here. Sigh...this was really my favorite gel. There was no glycerin, no protein, and now there are both! I have 1 more full bottle of the old formulation. I'll wait for reviews of the new formulation before deciding whether or not to try it.

Goodbye to another HG product. :(

  1. Like you, I am so disappointed in this "new and improved" formula. Based on all the negative feedback, I don't think that this was a successful move for this company. This gel has been perfect for me for almost 4 years. My whole regimen revolves around the Curly Magic. This is very disheartening for people like me, who have their regimen down to a tee. I am leery about paying $25 for a protein, glycerin-based gel.

    1. Thanks for commenting!

Yea, I thought it was perfect as is. It was a staple for many naturals because it worked well AND was glycerin- and protein-free. It was also a cheaper (crunch-free) alternative to Kinky Curly Curling Custard (I think their 16oz is $30).

I avoid glycerin gels so this new formula doesn't appeal to me. If I get tired of making and using flax seed gel, I might try KCCC again.

      Kinks ;-)

    2. I live in humid Houston. I used the new formula on yesterday morning for my wash n go and I was a big poofy mess by midnight. I have been a loyal curly magic user since 2009, but I'm currently on the prowl for another high quality hair gel.

Also, I went to the store in Rice Village to purchase the curly magic last weekend. I looked at the ingredients to see what's different. I asked the owner if wheat protein has always been an ingredient and he told me, "yes, stay off the blogs." When I got home I compared formulations and realized I need to take my business elsewhere as I hate being lied to. That is all.

    3. Hi Donna,

I hate when I go to a store and the staff isn't knowledgeable about the products they're selling. I do my own research before purchasing most products.

I'm a little devastated it didn't work for you! LOL I was still holding onto hope that somehow the new formulation would be good. I have no idea what I will replace it with. Nothing gives me the shine and softness yet lasting hold that I get with the previous formula of UFD CM.

I'm considering KCCC or revisiting Pattern Pusha. If you find a gel, please let me know. :)

      Sincerely,
      Kinks ;-)

  2. I absolutely HATE this new formula. I've been rationing my old bottle, waiting for the health food store to replenish and this is what I get?!

When I got my 2 new bottles day before yesterday, I immediately noticed the darker color. I was leary but hopeful. I used it yesterday, the same way I always do and I saw immediately slimy it was (like snot, sorry), didn't smell as good and when I put it in my hair, it dissipated. It didn't penetrate my hair at all, like the old formula. Later last night & this morning, my hair feels grimy bc the product is still sitting on my hair. I now realize its the glycerin and wheat protein that's in the product. My 3b/3c hair hates those ingredients!!

I'm now lost bc I loved this product and was willing to shell out $50 at a time to stock up. My hair loved this like no other. And my 2nd and 3rd day hair was awesome. Now I don't know what I'm gonna do. Smh.

Change it back! Get rid of the fillers you are using to stretch the product!!

    1. Hi, thanks for commenting!

I am holding onto my last bottle for as long as possible (special occasion use only). I was hoping to find another gel to replace it before I finish it, but that doesn't seem like it will happen. Nothing has come close to the results I got with the old UFD CM.

If I do ever find a better gel, I'll be sure to post it.

      Sincerely,
      Kinks ;-)

  4. UPDATE TO ALL THE UNCLE JUNKIES!!!
DUE TO THE HIGH VOLUME OF REJECTION TO THE NEW FORMULA, UNCLE FUNKY'S CHANGED THEIR FORMULA BACK TO THE OLD FORMULATION WE ALL SO MUCH LOVED. its not easy for me to get a curl pattern to my 4a 4b hair type so I use this product mostly for the ease in moisturizing my hair. Being protein sensitive and hating glycerin, I freaked when I noticed the company had changed its formula according to this post. after calling the company because I just shelled out 35 bucks for a bottle I just ordered, that's when Renee told me that due to the high volume of complaints to the new formula it was changed back to the old formula! Phew! this is the only product besides shea moisture that gets the job done in one punch!!! Woop! Woop
