Protective Style: Kinky Twists

Happy New Year!!! Yes, I know I'm late with that, but since it's my first post of the new year, I might as well.

I've been wearing kinky twists for about week now, and apparently my commitment issues are so extreme they extend to my hair because I am ready to take these OUT! They still look fresh, and my scalp isn't itchy or anything. It's just that I miss being able to play in my hair. Try products. Change my style everyday. True, while I'm doing these things on a daily basis, I conversely wish I didn't have to do my hair at all. (I guess I'm also hard to please.)

This was my first time doing braids or twists with extensions. I watched Toni Daley's and AfrikanHairGod's (part 1 & part 2) Youtube videos to learn how to do the style. Here are a few things I learned while installing these-yes, install, because it definitely was a process.

1) Find a comfortable spot to braid/twist in for a lengthy amount of time. I tried to do mine while standing, and ended up with swollen ankles, an achy back, achy thighs, achy knees--you get the idea.

2) After the first few you really won't need the mirror.

3) Braid the roots for about an inch, and then start twisting.

4)Twist each separate strand of the twist away from each other while twisting. This makes the twist tighter and last longer.

5) Do NOT cut the hair after you've already twisted it to the end. Instead use the borrow method. If the strands are not even, borrow from one side to complete the twist. I spent an hour attempting to correct my mistake. Save yourself the time.

In total, it took me about 14 hours. I used Equal Freetress Marley Braid hair; it took about 4 packs to do my entire head. If my parting were smaller, I'd probably have needed 5. I used the full length of the hair, which probably added to the amount of time it took to complete the style.

Overall, I'm happy with it. Would I do it again? Eventually, yes.

My goal is to keep the twists in for 4 weeks, but we'll see if that actually happens.
